Summer School One 2nd – 5th May 2001

Objectives

The main objective for this course were to provide training in the theory and practice of underwater archaeology to the Sullom Voe Sub Aqua Club, up to NAS Part I level including the collection of data for preparation of the NAS part II survey report.

The secondary objective was to assist our club with the survey of the Ayrshire.

Twelve Divers completed the Summer school, eleven from the Sullom Voe Sub Aqua Club (SAA) and one from the Lerwick Sub Aqua Club (SSAC)

Logistics

Lectures took place at the local open water sports centre at Brae.

A convenient & safe shallow open water training area near the water sports centre for introduction course.

Ayrshire Geo was the main diving site for the second part of the project, and lies in 10 – 18 metres of water.  There are numerous bad weather alternatives sites from a survey point of view.

The club provided our own boats (launched at Brae), oxygen on site, compressors, and nitrox (if required)

Tutors

NAS Scotland supplied two tutors to run the course. They were Douglas McElvogue who works for the Mary Rose Trust, and is a Shetlander and Dave Parham who works for Wessex Archaeology.

Safety
