Excavation

A specialist Part III excavation course was run for those who already possess a NAS Part I.

After completing lectures at the Brae water sports centre, we went to Muckle Roe marina and tried out the Air lift and Water dredges.

Okay who called the plumber.

We had to build the two water dredges that we required for the course, the local hardware store thought that our diving officer had gone made when he ordered all the parts that were required to build them.

Day 1 Muckle Roe Marina training site 4 - 6 Meters

Divers were checked in by Peter Pritchard of NAS Scotland
As well as our home made water dredges an air lift was borrowed from the Lerwick Sub Aqua Club

Day 2 Underwater Dredge Training Ayrshire site 17 - 18m

The sediments covering the remaining hull planking are extreamly mobile and no sign of stratification exists. NAS therefore allowed us to utilise the water dredge’s to clear a large area of planking. The erosion apparent in the remaining wood is most probably due to a combination of abbrasion by the mobile sediments and consumption by sea life
